Shear capacity

The shear capacity of the "BCI® Joists" series was established by testing in accordance with ASTM D 5055. Qualification and quality-control tests were used to establish the applicable coefficient of variation, CVw,  and the reliability normalization factor from Table 16.2.3.2 of CSA O86 was used to determine the specified strength.

Moment capacity

The moment capacity qualification was carried out using the analytical method in accordance with ASTM D 5055. Qualification and quality control tests were used to establish the applicable coefficient of variation, CVw, and the reliability normalization factor from Table 16.2.3.2 of CSA O86 was used to determine the specified strength.

Stiffness

A bending test program of varying depths was used to confirm the stiffness capacity. The following formula should be used to predict mid-span deflection:

Δ deflection = 5 w L 4 384 E I shear-free × 10 3 + w L 2 K

where EIShear-Free = Shear-free stiffness, taken from Table 4.1.1.1, w = uniform load (kN/m), L = span (mm), K = shear deflection coefficient taken from Table 4.1.1.1

Creep

The specimens were tested for creep performance as per ASTM D 5055, which states that two specimens  from each I-joist series group shall be loaded to 1.5 times the design resistive moment capacity for 1 hour and unloaded to basic dead load. The average deflection recovery must exceed 90% of the deflection between the basic dead load (20% design) and the end of the 1-h load period of 1.5 times the total load.

Bearing length

Tests were conducted to qualify a minimum bearing length of 38 mm and 44 mm at end supports, and 89 mm at intermediate supports. Qualification tests were used to establish the applicable coefficient of variation, CVw, and the reliability normalization factor from Table 16.2.3.2 of CSA O86 was used to determine the specified end reaction capacity and intermediate reaction capacity at the minimum bearing length.

Adhesive qualification

The web-to-web joints are bonded with a polyurethane emulsion polymer (PEP) adhesive (see CCMC 13511-L and CCMC 13512-L) and the web-to-flange joints are bonded with an emulsion polymer isocyanate (EPI) adhesive (see CCMC 13591-L).
