Appendix A – Additional Information
The design values obtained from tests following the principles of CSA O122 and CSA O86 design values.
Property | Test Information |
---|---|
Positive moment capacity | Testing indicated that the stiffness and specified strength in bending for the product compares directly with the specified strengths for lodgepole pine and/or spruce glued-laminated timber in CAN/CSA-O86-14, Table 7.3. General design provisions for the calculation of moment capacity, as set forth in CAN/CSA-O86-14, are applicable. |
Negative moment capacity | To determine the design value for bending due to negative moment, a total of 408 lumber pieces and 120 fingerjointed samples of spruce/lodgepole lumber were tested. The lower 95% tension strength, in MPa, was determined for Band "C" grades (graded to CAN/CSA-O122-M89) in various sizes. The ratio of ultimate tension strength (UTS) for CAN/CSA-O122-M89 grade "C" to grade "B" was determined for two widths of lumber and for one width of fingerjointed lumber. This ratio ranged from 0.79 to 0.85. The specified strength due to negative moment was determined for Westlam-E beams by applying the UTS ratio to the known value of specified strength in bending due to positive moment. The specified strength in bending due to negative moment calculated in this way is 19.2 MPa. |
Adhesives | Exterior type phenol-resorcinol and melamine adhesives are qualified by APA for use in end-joints and face bonds in the product. All adhesives qualified have a CCMC evaluation and demonstrated compliance with the applicable standard. The adhesives used are listed in Table 2.1 of this Report. |
Manufacturing quality assurance | The manufacturing quality assurance program follows the principles of CAN/CSA-O177 and is verified by APA- EWS as part of the plant certification. As per CAN/CSA-O177, when the adhesive used complies with CAN/CSA-O112.9, additional fire performance testing is required for decision making by the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ). |
